Limits on the Spatial Extent of Active Galactic Nuclei Measured with the Fine Guidance Sensors of the Hubbl E Space T El Escope1

چکیده
The optical structures of several active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been studied using the Ðne guidance sensors (FGSs) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ). The FGSs are interferometric devices that can resolve structure on scales of 20 mas or less and hence have the potential to improve on the resolution attainable by HST Ïs cameras. The FGSs produce interferometric fringes known as S curves, which are related to the intensity proÐle of the object on the sky. These have been analyzed using a simple model for the radial intensity distribution and strength of the underlying background illumination of the observed objects. Eight di†erent observations of six di†erent AGNs have been analyzed. No statistically signiÐcant di†erences from point sources are detected, but signiÐcant upper limits of order 20 mas are placed on any spatial extent. Systematic e†ects limiting the resolution are discussed, and some simple conclusions about the physical size and luminosity densities of the emitting regions of the AGNs implied by the data are given. متن کاملInterferometric Astrometry of Proxima Centauri and Barnardïs Star Using Hubbl E Space T El Escope Fine Guidance Sensor 3: Detection Limits for Substellar Companions1
We report on a substellar-companion search utilizing interferometric fringe-tracking astrometry acquired with Fine Guidance Sensor 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our targets were Proxima Centauri and BarnardÏs star. We obtain absolute parallax values of for Proxima nabs\ 0A.7687^ 0A.0003 Cen and for BarnardÏs star. Once low-amplitude instrumental systematic errors nabs\ 0A.5454^ 0A.0003 are i...
متن کاملThe First Definitive Binary Orbit Determined with the Hubbl E Space T El Escope Fine Guidance Sensors: Wolf
The M dwarf binary, Wolf 1062 (Gliese 748), has been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) Fine Guidance Sensor 3 in the transfer function scan mode to determine the apparent orbit. This is the Ðrst orbit deÐned fully and exclusively with HST , and is the most accurate deÐnitive orbit for any resolved, noneclipsing system. The orbital period is 2.4490^ 0.0119 yr and the semimajor axis...
متن کاملMode Identification of Pulsating White Dwarfs Using the Hubbl E Space T El Escope1
We have obtained time-resolved ultraviolet spectroscopy for the pulsating DAV stars G226-29 and G185-32 and for the pulsating DBV star PG 1351]489 with the Hubble Space T elescope Faint Object Spectrograph to compare the ultraviolet to the optical pulsation amplitude and determine the pulsation indices. We Ðnd that for essentially all observed pulsation modes, the amplitude rises to the ultravi...
متن کاملAnalysis of the impact of space organization on the viability of the Karaj metropolitan core
Abstract With the rapid growth of population and urbanization since the last century, the complexity and understanding of the spatial organization of the city, as well as the ability to predict urban events in its spaces, have become difficult and in some cases impossible. Karaj metropolis is one of the major metropolitan areas of Iran that has been experiencing rapid population growth and thi...
